Hispanic Heritage Month is observed each year from September 15 to October 15 to recognize, honor, and celebrate the tremendous influence Hispanic Americans have had on our culture and world at large. We’re grateful for our Hispanic and Latinx Invenergy colleagues and as we close out Hispanic Heritage Month, we are excited to highlight a few of their stories.
What does Hispanic heritage mean to you and how has your heritage shaped who you are today?

“Hispanic heritage can be such a broad term and I think it takes on different meanings from person to person. For me, it represents family, community, commonality, and being first-generation. Being a first-gen college graduate in my family certainly came with its share of struggles and responsibilities, but I was lucky to grow up surrounded by other friends and family members going through similar experiences. I’m grateful to be close to my family, and they’ve always had a knack for taking on challenges with levity. I think I take that energy with me in most aspects of my day-to-day life and am appreciative of it.”

“My heritage is important to me as it keeps me close to my family and our many traditions. Since a lot of my extended family doesn’t live close by, when we do get together and get to celebrate our history, holidays, and more it's always special for me. A lot of the stories my grandpa and my dad have shared helped to shape my identity. As I get older and have moved around, I try to bring pieces of my culture with me – whether it be art, recipes, or taking part in other Hispanic celebrations in surrounding Chicago neighborhoods and communities.”

“To me, Hispanic heritage has meant blending the two cultures of which I’m a part of – finding this combination where both coexist and have created something new. Latin food in general is definitely on the top of my list on how it’s shaped me, trying to bring some of those flavors and influences from home to the US. More importantly, my approach to friendships and family has created unique relationships in my life. I’ve always been grateful for the chance to experience the “American dream” and to thrive in a society that values innovation.”

“My Hispanic heritage has shaped every aspect of my life. My native language, the foods I eat, my hobbies (like salsa dancing), my travel habits, my sense of family and community have all been informed by the place and the culture where I grew up. Most importantly, I am always cognizant of the incredible sacrifice my family made to emigrate here, the help we received from kind strangers, our family and the government; the luck we had for things to go exactly right, and the hard work that we put in to ‘live the American dream’. We didn’t do it alone, it takes a village, and it’s my responsibility to pay it back and pay it forward.”
