No Crane, No Lid, No Problem for Invenergy Services
A few years ago, Invenergy Services’ Field Service team members had an idea that they could considerably reduce the cost of a High-Speed Intermediate Shaft (HSIS) replacement by avoiding the use of an external crane. After several long road trips spent brainstorming ideas of how to remove the nacelle lid and allow for proper clearance to swap the HSIS, Field Service team members took a trip to visit a local technical college that had a grounded nacelle where they finally got to test out the practicability of their ideas. After taking detailed measurements and finalizing the process of the swap, the team put their plans in motion and began designing the necessary equipment and ordering the right parts and tools to execute the new procedure.
Earlier this month, the Field Service team realized their vision and successfully completed an HSIS swap without using an external crane or taking off the nacelle lid on a GE turbine at one of Invenergy’s Kansas wind facilities. We are excited to deploy this technique more widely and bring associated cost savings for our fleet and our customers.
Congratulations to the entire Field Service team on this accomplishment many years in the making! This is truly an embodiment of innovation in energy.
