Women in Construction Week: Voices From Invenergy’s Own Women in Project Management, Pre-Construction, and Construction

by Invenergy Team

This week was National Women in Construction Week and to celebrate, we talked to some of our female colleagues on the Project Management, Pre-Construction and Construction teams to hear about their experience in the industry, why they like their job, and how to make construction more friendly to women who wish to enter the field.

“I think there is an old school perception that construction is about winning, about one-upping your counterparty, being the most aggressive and demanding negotiator on the table and navigating an everlasting hostile environment. Some companies still operate like that. And that is not an attractive prospect for many young professional women. It wouldn’t have been for me at least.”
- Raquel Justa Lopez, Senior Project Manager, Construction

“Companies should continue to promote information about the women that are already making contributions in the construction industry. Seeing other women who are successful in this field inspires me when I have self-doubts.”
- Dylan Masi, Senior Associate, Pre-Construction

“We should plant seeds in the minds of young women in our communities that construction is a viable career field with vast opportunities including safety, environmental, engineering, equipment operators, and construction areas of focus. There are numerous careers in the construction field that many women may not know about.”
- Kimberly Fryer, Construction Manager, currently at Maple Flats Solar

“There is a wealth of information and knowledge within [the construction] industry. While this is what keeps the job interesting, it also means that it requires constant learning and flexibility. Though this job may be challenging, I don’t believe that this is a negative attribute. Being challenged leads to growth and improvement.”
- Grace Ports, Analyst, Pre-Construction
