Invenergy Services Surpasses Major Milestone In Managed Portfolio

Operating and maintaining a fleet of more than 100 clean energy facilities requires a dedicated team working diligently behind the scenes so Invenergy can continue delivering clean energy where it’s needed. That’s where our Operations Engineering team comes in.  

Andrew Nigro and Matt Conwell, Invenergy Vice Presidents, Operations Engineering, oversee this robust team which comprises everyone from electrical and mechanical engineers to data analysis experts and control room operators. Despite the nuanced yet comprehensive responsibilities of this team, Nigro says their work shares one simple goal: ensuring the safety, reliability, and high performance of Invenergy Services’ operating fleet.  

Below, Conwell and Nigro talk more about what their team does, what it’s like working at Invenergy and why they enjoy working in the clean energy industry. 

 You two oversee different groups within the Operations Engineering team. Tell us more about the differences between your groups. 

 I lead three groups within this team: Electrical Engineering, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), and Control Room Operations. The Electrical Engineering team has a wide range of responsibilities, including maintaining wind and solar assets, high-voltage equipment, batteries, and more.  

Our SCADA team has four main responsibilities: field data collection, OEM SCADA, instrumentation and controls, and generation management systems.  

And, lastly, the Control Center is the heart of our operations, so this team is doing anything from troubleshooting issues with turbines, resetting turbines and inverters, communicating with transmission authorities and ensuring compliance with state and regulatory agencies. 

I oversee three teams as well. The first is our Mechanical Engineering group. That group includes the subject matter experts on the componentry of our assets, from gearboxes and bearings experts to lubrication and generator and blade experts.  

Next is the Availability Engineering team, whom we refer to as the technical generalists. While the members of our Mechanical Engineering group are experts on specific components across our fleet, the Availability Engineering team members are the Jacks and Jills of all trades.  

Then my third group is the Performance Analytics team, which is responsible for tracking and analyzing any of the data that’s associated with our assets. 

 With all of that happening every day, what do you each find most interesting about working at Invenergy? 

I like that we’re able to see the full lifecycle of a project, all the way from construction until a project is decommissioned. And because of the size and scope of our fleet, we’re addressing a wide range of problems on a day-to-day basis. So there are always interesting challenges to solve, and as an engineer, I find that appealing. 

 Because Invenergy has so many different technologies within our clean energy portfolio, it gives everyone an opportunity to learn something new. Say someone works on wind assets for a few years, but then decides they’re interested in solar or energy storage, they’re able to switch. There are so many opportunities to work on different things at Invenergy. We also give individuals a lot of opportunities to make decisions and find the right path forward for the company. 

 Yeah, Invenergy is definitely a collaborative organization. I’ve had people tell me that it’s refreshing how much the engineering team works with other departments rather than being siloed away. 

 For anyone who is thinking about transitioning to a career in the clean energy industry, what can they expect?  

 Renewables is a tight-knit industry. The space is growing so quickly that there’s room for everyone to find their niche and become an expert in their field in a way that not only supports Invenergy, but the industry as a whole. We work quite a bit with trade groups, the National Lab system, and other organizations that bring many companies together to solve industry-wide issues. 

When we go to a conference or a trade show, people are very open about discussing their challenges. We’re all trying to succeed, and it’s nice to see that it’s not necessarily a me-versus-you environment. 

Do you have any advice for someone interested in joining Invenergy’s Operations Engineering team? 

The best advice I could give is to just apply for the job you’re interested in. We have people on our team with a wide variety of backgrounds, people from different countries or people who didn’t start their careers as engineers. I wouldn’t get hung up on not feeling qualified for a position. I think the traits we look for in someone are confidence, the ability to learn, somebody who’s driven to grow and ask questions, and someone who’s interested in the clean energy industry. It’s incredibly important to get out in the field to see what our technicians do on a day-to-day basis and to be someone who wants to get hands-on experience to learn.

An Introduction to Invenergy Services’ Owner’s Mindset

Invenergy Services’ site technicians keep an important principle in mind while on the job high up in a wind turbine or in the far corner of a solar field: ‘R-squared,’ or ‘risk and working remotely,’ two factors that emphasize why safety is a principle at every site Invenergy Services operates and a pillar of company culture.

We want to keep our colleagues healthy and safe, and our rigorous approach to safety can translate to more productive sites for customers and operators.

“From a safety standpoint, you know what you’re going to get – Invenergy technicians are going to be trained up and doing their job safely,” says Invenergy’s Vice President, Environmental Health and Safety Len Tully. “We know we can put our technicians up against anyone in the business when it comes to safety.”

In 2019, we brought more of our instruction in-house to provide technicians with training specific to our equipment and philosophy. We provide techs with 70 hours of instruction each year and cover working at heights, first aid, and many other aspects of the job they do each day. We also host numerous onsite safety drills throughout the year, including quarterly crisis rehearsals involving local emergency responders and life-flight helicopters.

A program of proactive preventative maintenance and equipment monitoring complements our rigorous safety culture by minimizing the climbing and repairs technicians need to do. Fleetwide near-miss and incident reporting generates useful observations from the field that refine how we train and work.

“Managers recognize that employees are always watching them and what they’re doing and how they handle different situations. The way a manager reacts is the example and will affect how techs approach site safety,” Len says. “But it’s not just the safety manager who sets the tone and the culture – it’s the employee engagement and participation that’s made a difference.”

Our emphasis on safety also resonates with the communities where we operate since many of our technicians are hired from the surrounding communities. “Word spreads quickly on your reputation. When you can stand up for your safety culture against the neighboring wind site employer or other companies in the area, it can be the difference in getting a candidate to sign up with Invenergy." As Len points out, every employee is empowered to stop work at any time if they have a safety concern.

“The full support that we get from the top down when it comes to safety is very impressive,” he says. “I’ve been in the safety business a long time, and this is one of the few companies where our senior leaders have been fully supportive of everything we want to do around safety.”

				Innovative Financing Facilitated $1.5 Billion Acquisition

 (August 15, 2023) - Invenergy, the leading privately held developer, owner, and operator of sustainable energy solutions, today announced IRG Acquisition Holdings (IRGAH), a partnership between Invenergy, CDPQ and funds managed by Blackstone Infrastructure Partners (Blackstone), has closed on the acquisition of American Electric Power’s (AEP) 1,365-megawatt (MW) unregulated, contracted renewables portfolio for $1.5 billion enterprise value. 

“This transaction was the result of our innovative financing approach, the strength of our investor consortium, and our exceptional team who will integrate the projects into our portfolio in collaboration with our partners and service providers,” said Meghan Schultz, Executive Vice President and CFO at Invenergy. “Invenergy has industry-leading operations and asset management capabilities, and we look forward to applying our unmatched expertise to this portfolio of projects.” 

The portfolio, the largest ever acquisition for American-led Invenergy, includes 14 projects in 11 states and is comprised of 1,200 MW of wind generation and 165 MW of solar projects. The renewable power generated by these projects is contracted under long-term agreements with various utilities, corporations, and municipalities. 

IRGAH secured a $580 million commitment for a first-of-its-kind PTC tax credit transfer with Bank of America Securities, who served as Transferability Underwriter and Placement Agent and Financial Advisor. 

“We are excited to support this transaction with Invenergy and their partners in IRG Acquisition Holdings. This represents the first announced large scale transferability transaction to close since the passing of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) in August 2022 and creates a financeable transferability product that will be used to scale the growth of renewable energy, energy transition, and its associated supply chain development,” said Karen Fang, Global Head of Sustainable Finance at Bank of America.   

The consortium secured committed financing to support this acquisition from Banco Santander S.A., New York Branch, who acted as Structuring Agent, Coordinating Lead Arranger, and Co-Green Loan Coordinator; Coöperatieve Rabobank U.A., New York Branch, who acted as Coordinating Lead Arranger and Due Diligence Bank; Natixis CIB who acted as Coordinating Lead Arranger and Co-Green Loan Coordinator; and Export Development Canada who acted as Coordinating Lead Arranger.  

Additional lenders included: Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria S.A., New York Branch; Banco de Sabadell, S.A., Miami Branch; Bayerische Landesbank, New York Branch; CaixaBank, S.A.; MetLife, Inc.; National Westminster Bank plc; Norddeutsche Landesbank Girozentrale, New York Branch; Société Générale; and ICBC, New York Branch.

Airstreams Renewables programs help active-duty personnel and veterans transition to civilian life. As part of the Department of Defense SkillBridge program, Airstreams connects service members with industry partners for real-world job training where they gain valuable civilian work experience in the renewable energy sector during their last 180 days of service and helps program graduates secure careers in clean energy, telecommunications, and other industrial sectors. More than 7,000 military veterans and military spouses have completed the program at Airstreams Renewables across its eight SkillBridge active-duty branch campuses and at its newly expanded National Training Center.

Invenergy Surpasses 30 Gigawatts of Clean Energy Projects as it Celebrates 20th Anniversary

The 998-megawatt Traverse Energy Center has achieved commercial operations

and is the largest of three wind energy projects collectively known as the North Central Energy Facilities

. Traverse is powered by 356 of GE’s 2MW platform turbines. 

 – Invenergy, the largest privately held global developer, owner and operator of sustainable energy solutions and GE Renewable Energy, today announced commercial operations for the 998-megawatt Traverse Wind Energy Center, the largest wind farm constructed in a single phase in North America.

Located in north central Oklahoma, Traverse joins the operational 199-megawatt Sundance Wind Energy Center and the 287-megawatt Maverick Wind Energy Center, as the last of three projects developed by Invenergy for American Electric Power (AEP) to reach commercial operation. These projects make up the North Central Energy Facilities and have 531 GE turbines with a combined capacity of 1,484 megawatts, making them collectively among the largest wind energy facilities globally. 

“This is a moment that Invenergy and our valued partners at AEP, GE Renewable Energy, and the gracious members of our home communities in Oklahoma have been looking forward to,” said Jim Shield, Senior Executive Vice President and Development Business Leader at Invenergy. “With the completion of Traverse and with it the North Central Energy Facilities, we’re proud to further our commitment to responsible, clean energy development and to advance our mission to build a sustainable world.” 

The North Central Energy Facilities represent a $2 billion capital investment in north central Oklahoma, directly investing in the local economy through new tax revenues and lease payments to participating landowners and will generate enough electricity to power 440,000 American homes. 

“GE was honored to work with Invenergy on this milestone wind project, continuing our long-standing partnership,” said Steve Swift, Global Commercial Leader for GE’s Onshore Wind business. “Wind power is a key element of driving decarbonization, and a dependable and affordable energy option here in the US and around the world. GE’s 2MW platform turbines are ideally suited to bring reliable and sustainable renewable energy to the region for many years to come.”

AEP’s subsidiaries Southwestern Electric Power Company (SWEPCO) and Public Service Company of Oklahoma (PSO) assumed ownership of the three wind farms upon start of commercial operations to serve their customers in Arkansas, Louisiana and Oklahoma. 

Invenergy Services, a subsidiary of Invenergy, will provide Operations and Maintenance and Balance of Plant services under a 10-year agreement, adding to the 13-gigawatt global sustainable energy project portfolio it manages.
