Orangeville Wind and Storage

How it came together
The first phase of Orangeville, a 94-megawatt wind farm, achieved commercial operation in 2014. On its own, the facility represented an important step in New York’s clean energy transition, as well as another successful project in Invenergy’s portfolio of clean energy development in the state. However, in 2021, Invenergy exercised our expertise in storage, adding a 20-megawatt co-located energy storage facility nearby. The addition has helped New York move closer to achieving its goal of generating 70% of its electricity from renewable sources and building 6,000 megawatts of energy storage by 2030 and 100% zero-emission electricity by 2040.1
What sets it apart
Orangeville represents Invenergy’s ability to pair state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery technology with existing wind energy projects to meet expanding energy needs.
Energy storage can play an important role in the resiliency of power grids by providing reactive, on-demand support when the grid needs it most. Energy storage can also provide reliable voltage and frequency stability, helping regulate the grid and serve customers with reliable low-cost electricity. Storage facilities like Orangeville are dispatchable, able to quickly and accurately respond to the needs of the grid, making fine or large adjustments as necessary. This support helps provide stability, balancing supply and demand, especially during weather and other destabilizing events that may otherwise cause disruptions to the power grid.
What's the impact
The facility can move up to 20 megawatts of electricity at a moment's notice. The site has also contributed more than $60,000 in investments to the local community through taxes and payments to the county, towns, school districts and local fire departments. In recognition of the project’s technical prowess, the Orangeville energy storage project received Energy Storage North America’s Innovation award and the Energy Storage Association’s Outstanding Industry Achievement award.
